Paving its own path towards a sustainable hydrogen future from its very origins, Hydrolite stands out as a unique player in the startup arena. Here’s how this remarkable journey unfolded.
In an era where sustainable solutions are paramount, the push for innovative and environmentally friendly technologies is more urgent than ever. Emerging from Israel’s dynamic startup ecosystem, Hydrolite responds to this global challenge with a commitment to transforming the energy landscape through green hydrogen technology.
Forging New Paths in Hydrogen
Once an energy business unit within Elbit Systems, Hydrolite carved out its own path in 2016, becoming an independent subsidiary focused on harnessing the potential of hydrogen technologies for civilian use.
By 2020, the company had sharpened its focus on developing Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) electrolyzers for green hydrogen production. “Being pioneers in the AEM field,” says CEO Dr. Ervin Tal-Gutelmacher, “We had a clear vision to be the leading AEM company in green hydrogen production.”
The company’s extensive portfolio of intellectual property, including 56 published patents, covers the entire AEM domain – from core materials to complete systems for hydrogen production and fuel cells. This broad scope ensures that Hydrolite maintains a competitive edge in both innovation and application.
A Team of Passionate Innovators
Hydrolite’s greatest asset is its team, according to the CEO. With over 100 combined man years of research experience, including five PhDs and numerous master’s degree holders, the company is a powerhouse of knowledge and innovation. Their expertise spans chemical engineering, electrochemistry, and material synthesis, enabling the development and implementation of unique hydrogen technology solutions.
“Our team is a mix of seasoned experts and passionate innovators,” explains Tal-Gutelmacher. “We seek individuals who are motivated, hands-on, and capable of thinking outside the box. This approach has been crucial in driving our numerous patents and technological advancements.”
Millions of Dollars Invested
Hydrolite’s technology revolves around its patented membrane and materials, advanced manufacturing processes, and various catalysts. The company focuses on high-performance components that are both efficient and cost-effective. This dedication to innovation has positioned Hydrolite as a leader in the development of AEM devices for hydrogen generation and conversion.
Since its inception, Hydrolite has invested around $55 million in laboratory infrastructure, manufacturing facilities, and human resources. This investment has built a robust foundation for research and development, ensuring that its products meet the highest standards of performance and reliability.
Dr. Tal-Gutelmacher’s vision for Hydrolite is clear: “We aim to develop the first-of-its-kind multi-megawatt scale AEM electrolyzer.” With a strategic focus on market-ready solutions and cost-effective technologies, Hydrolite is poised to make a significant impact on the global hydrogen and energy market.
Leadership Through Innovation
The CEO’s journey began far from the boardrooms of Hydrolite. After her academic career in hydrogen research, marked by numerous awards, including the prestigious Wolf Prize for Young Scientists and the Alexander von Humboldt and Minerva Fellowships, she came back from Germany to Israel in 2010 to head the R&D of the newly-established energy business unit at Elbit Systems – the unit that was spun-out to today’s Hydrolite.
“Since I was a young scientist, I was curious and passionate about hydrogen and energy,” she admits. “I took this passion beyond academia and in the course of 15 years, grew to build, develop and execute cutting-edge green energy solutions together with the best minds and talented team. I’m proud to have been appointed the first woman CEO of an Elbit Systems’ subsidiary. I believe, along with the other employees of our company, that we can truly change the world.”
Dr. Tal-Gutelmacher is also dedicated to promoting women in science and engineering. “The mentoring and advancement of young female scientists is very close to my heart,” she says. “I strive to provide equal opportunities for career advancement, encouraging more women to pursue careers in engineering and science.”
Crafting a Sustainable Future
Hydrolite stands not only as an innovator of unique technology but also as a beacon for a sustainable, hydrogen-fueled future. With a robust team, deep research capabilities, and a clear, impactful vision, Hydrolite is poised to lead the green hydrogen charge – creating a cleaner, more sustainable world for generations to come.
